Canvas Care Guide
How to Care for Your Canvas Gear
At Underkover Australia, we use Australian-made canvas that is impregnated—not coated—with proofing agents. This results in a superior waterproof and breathable fabric that’s built tough for the harsh Aussie outdoors. Whether you’re using a canvas swag, chainsaw bag, duffle or cover, caring for your gear properly will ensure it lasts for many adventures to come.
Pre-Season Before First Use
We strongly recommend pre-seasoning your canvas gear before using it for the first time. Also known as weathering or pre-conditioning, this step helps tighten the canvas weave and seal needle holes, enhancing waterproofing.
Steps:
- Soak the canvas using rain or a garden hose until it’s thoroughly wet.
- Let it dry completely.
- Repeat the process once more.
Post-Use Drying & Storage
- Always dry your canvas gear completely before storage.
- Shake off or brush away any sand, dirt, or organic matter.
Storage tips:
- Store in a dry, ventilated space.
- Avoid sealed plastic containers.
- Use breathable cotton or calico bags for long-term storage.
Cleaning Your Canvas
You can clean your canvas gear with a soft brush or a gentle hose-down.
Avoid using:
- Soaps or detergents
- Solvents or petroleum-based products
- Bleach or chemical mould removers
Reproofing Over Time
Over time, your canvas may require reproofing to restore its water resistance.
- Use a canvas reproofer spray or wax safe for impregnated canvas.
- Reapply every few years or after extended heavy use.
Dealing with Mould
- Mix 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water.
- Lightly mist the affected area.
- Scrub gently with a soft brush.
- Rinse and dry completely in sunlight.
